Homeland 

Rabah (Zariqa ) is one of the small mammals that belong to the Zabidae family, and there are more than 34 species of it.

It is known as ” Common gene ”, and it is also known in Yemen and southern Saudi Arabia as ” Pepsi ”.While it was found throughout the African continent, it was also introduced to southern Europe and the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen, Oman, and southern Saudi Arabia . They were introduced around 700 AD for reasons believed to be pest control or as pets .

Habitat

Rabah (Zariqa) is a semi-tree animal (which means that it is often found in trees).It prefers to live in areas with dense vegetation, such as shrubs, thickets, and evergreen oak forests.

Trees with dense leaves are also used in dense forests.

The shape of the baboons (Al-Zuraika)

Its body is slender, resembling a cat, and its tail is long.

Its head is small, with a pointed nose, large oval ears, and large eyes .

Its body length is 43 – 55 cm, and its tail length is 33 – 52 cm .

Males are heavier than females and weigh an average of 2 kg and are 10% larger than females .

Its fur is dense and soft, and its color is light gray with many black markings.

It has well-developed whiskers up to 7 cm in length.

Its legs are short with semi-retractable claws .

Behavior

Rabah (zariqa) are active at night and are isolated animals that only meet during mating.

While there is a difference between the male and the female in choosing places to rest and hide.

The male prefers tree cavities, while the female prefers jungles and dense trees.Individuals communicate with each other through smell.

Anal glands are used to place scent marks on trees . 

Food and enemies

Rabah (Zariqa) is a carnivorous animal, as it feeds on insects, rodents, birds, and fish.

It also feeds on some fruits, such as figs and olives.

It hunts its prey, such as cats, where small rodents are picked up from the back and killed by a bite to the head.

Then it is eaten starting from the head, while wolves, foxes, dogs, lynxes, and honey badgers are its most prominent enemies . 

Reproduction of baboons (zariqa)

The mating season begins between February and March, and spring and fall are the peak times for births.

While the gestation period lasts 10 – 11 weeks, 1 – 5 cubs give birth, and the female alone takes care of the young .

Caring for children

The young are weaned at the age of four months.

When they reach five months of age, they become independent from their mother, become skilled at hunting on their own, and reach sexual maturity after two years.

While baboons (zariqa) can live in the wild for approximately 8 years, while in captivity they can live 20 – 22 years .

It is a nocturnal animal, is active at night and searches for food in the dark .

It adapts well to various environments, including desert areas, savannas and forests.

They feed on a variety of prey, including insects, cockroaches, mice, birds, and snakes .

The female gives birth once a year, and usually has 2 – 4 young .

It is considered one of the least threatened animals according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) list .
