 This unique yellow cardinal was first seen in Charlie Stevenson's backyard in Alabaster, Alabama in late January.  The distinctive bird has become a regular bird feeder, appearing at least once a day.

  According to Auburn University biology professor Jeffrey Hill, the cardinal carries a genetic mutation that makes its feathers bright yellow instead of the more common red shade.  “yellow cardinals are one case in a million”, Hill said.

 Cardinal, is a family of the order Passeriformes.  It is widespread in North and South America.

 The cardinal bird is abundant throughout the eastern half of North America, and is sometimes called the red bird.  The cardinal is between 18 and 23 cm long, and has a crest of feathers on its head that the bird raises to intimidate its enemies.
